2-STOREY RESIDENCE:
Building Our First Ground-up
The residential project, situated on a 100 sq.m. lot, posed a unique challenge of optimizing natural lighting and ventilation opportunities due to its narrow frontage and adjacent firewalls.
Despite the spatial constraints, the design was crafted to accommodate the needs of large families within a compact space, leveraging creative solutions to maximize functionality.

The construction process spanned a total of eight months of works, with an additional two months allocated for extensive site clearing.
Structural design innovations, such as incorporating wide flanges for columns and beams and utilizing steel deck flooring, ensured both durability and efficient space utilization.
Embracing an industrial design concept, the structure predominantly features black metal elements complemented by wooden accents and glass works.
Adaptations during construction included converting office doors into bifold glass panels to facilitate gatherings and integrating Solatube technology to introduce natural light into high ceiling areas. Additionally, the extension of the lanai wall served to provide additional privacy while also covering neighboring firewalls, enhancing both aesthetic appeal and functionality.
The project underscored the inevitability of changes during construction and the importance of aligning the design with the client’s needs. It highlighted the architect’s role in translating the client’s vision into a tangible built environment, emphasizing the iterative nature of the construction process.
Ultimately, the house stands as a testament to the collaborative effort between the client, architect, and construction team, showcasing innovative design solutions and valuable lessons learned throughout the project’s evolution.
